Secondary magnesium capacity forecast to see sharp increase

World secondary magnesium capacity could increase to 41,500 tpy by 2002, Peter Schweizer, of Eckart Non Ferrum, told delegates at the International Magnesium Assn conference this week. World secondary magnesium capacity in 2000 was estimated at 31,500 tpy and the 10,000-tonne increase is expected to come from an expansion at Magnesium Elektron in the UK, which will double its existing 10,000 tpy capacity.Schweizer said that the need to recycle magnesium has increased following growth in the diecasting sector and the resulting rise in availability of secondary magnesium. "Depending on the diecasting process, 30-50 percent (of material) can be scrap," he said. Eckart Non Ferrum obtains around 80 percent of its scrap from the diecasting industry and around 20 percent from post-consumer sources.
