Even if the smelter operates at less than its original nameplate capacity, Kennecott will be one of the lowest-cost producers in the world, not to mention the USA. The company will not say what its cash operating costs are, but analysts calculate they could be as low as 40 cents/lb if by-product gold, silver and molybdenum credits are included. While some industry observers are doubtful that the smelter will be restarted by the May 1 deadline, the company says there is every reason to believe the plant can be at full production by late this year.
