When Alcoa Cladding Systems asked Ted Miller of the Miller Clapperton Partnership to make a presentation in China about the benefits of Reynobond aluminum composite material, it was one of eight companies invited to compete for commission of a portion of the renovation work on the Beijing International Capital Airport. Located 18 miles northeast of Beijing, China, the airport was originally opened in 1957 and was expanded in 1980. During the 1980s and 90s, passenger traffic grew from 4.65 million passengers annually to 16.91 million passengers. It also handles nearly 500,000 tons of mail and freight each year. The entire airport renovation project consisted of a 336,000 sq. meter passenger terminal with 16 supporting facilities. Those facilities included a 464,000 sq. meter terminal apron, multi-story car park, business center and cargo station.
