Metal Integral to Transportation Facility's Historical Appeal

Although it is by no means a copy, there are unmistakable similarities between the Memphis Area Transit Authority's new Intermodal transportation facility and the historic structure it sits beside. That connection was one of the things agency officials were looking to establish when they commissioned a local architectural firm, JMGR Inc., to handle its design. Extensively used for its construction were metal roof and wall panels from Centria Inc., Pittsburgh, PA.The facility is located next door to Central Station, a downtown Memphis transportation icon from an era gone by. Elements of the old station's design are reflected through the steel framing and curved metal roofing used for the construction of the new facility's two canopies. One of those canopies was erected over the elevated train platform while the other covers a grade-level bus and trolley transfer area.
