This year (2003) marks a major milestone for one of the metal construction industry's leading architectural products. Twenty-five years ago, at a plant in Benton, KY, the domestic production of aluminum composite material (ACM) began. As has been the case from the start, the plant is owned and operated by Alcan Composites Inc. of St. Louis, MO. The ACM produced there is Alucobond Material. Contemporary office buildings were among the first applications for the new material. But within a relatively short period of time, it was also being specified for schools, hospitals, airports, libraries, hotels, convention centers and a variety of other buildings. Over the years, the material has also become increasingly popular for related uses like canopies and column covers, interiors and architectural signage/corporate identity. Many architects and designers like its sleek, "high-tech" look, as well as its compatibility with a wide range of other materials. The lightweight panels of 3mm, 4mm and 6mm thickness are rigid but fabricate easily into crisp folds and sweeping curves.
