LENEXA FIRE AND POLICE TRAINING FACILITY, FIRE STATION #3 AND POLICE SUBSTATION

The project includes a 25,000-square-foot fire and police training facility and a 5,000-square-foot police substation. The training facility has three double-length apparatus bays, living quarters, an exercise area, watch and captain's offices, a tiered training area, and breakout classrooms. The police substation includes offices, a detention/holding area and storage for a mobile command unit. Metal was selected for the roofs and the building exterior to reduce maintenance and provide a unique aesthetic quality. A dramatic metal element is a conical shaped wall that wraps around the exterior and flows into the interior through a glass wall creating a dynamic contrast against masonry and interior elements. It also forms the core of the large circular-shaped training room. The wall is custom fabricated of 16-gauge steel coated to give it a weathered look. The front coating of a custom pre-weathered rich brown color finished with two coats of oxide inhibitor. The back is coated with a zinc-rich paint.
