Theater With Retractable Metal Roof Leads Impressive 2004 Design Awards Field

From a field of 184 entries, six projects have come away with first place designations in the 2004 Metal Architecture/MCA Design Awards competition. Staff members from Metal Architecture magazine and a sister publication, Metal Construction News, judged the eighth annual competition. In addition to picking a winner in each of six categories based on the types of products or projects, the jury designated one winning project-the Bengt Sjostrom Starlight Theatre in Rockford, IL-as the contest's best overall. In addition to being recognized within the pages of the awards issue, each of the architects responsible for the design of a winning project will receive an assortment of prizes. For starters, there's a check for 1,000 dollars, a commemorative plaque and extra copies of the September 2004 issue, all courtesy of Metal Architecture magazine. And from the Metal Construction Association (MCA), which is co-sponsoring the contest for the third consecutive year, there are Scholarship Awards in the amount of 1,500 dollars each (2,500 dollars for the designer of the project voted best overall). Those awards will be presented in the name of each architect to the school of architecture or design of their choosing.
