Future-proof reefer developments rolled out

Sustainability, changing refrigerants and digitalisation are the key trends driving the container reefer industry forward. Thermo King vice president global marine Claudio Zanframundo says, "Sustainability is key for the shipping industry. With the latest IMO meeting in July 2023, and the adopted revised strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping, which target reaching net-zero GHG emissions from international shipping close to 2050, we all must act." He says, "On container vessels, the reefer unit and the ventilation system around the boxes utilise electric power generated by large auxiliary engines using crude oil. The challenge and requirement for the container reefer industry is to reduce the power consumption without compromising the cargo integrity." Thermo King, a brand of Trane Technologies, has bold 2030 sustainability commitments. These commitments include a pledge to reduce customer greenhouse gas emissions by one gigaton (2 of the world's annual emissions, the equivalent of the annual emissions of France, UK and Italy) through its products and solutions within heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) in buildings, processes and transport.
