In this hobby, nearly as important a skill as that of growing plants is the art of scrounging. I must be very good at it, because my original pleas raised several hundred plants from three countries, plus two substantial donations of pots to put themin, as well as a very varied selection of plants for future sales.A good number of the recipients are relatively new to the hobby, and those that 1 have spoken to claimed to have been enthused by the considerable boost to their collections. Benefits to the donors are less tangible: pleasure at increasing the enjoymentof fellow enthusiasts, clearing space for growing yet more plants, swapping cultivation advice, and learning about the arcana of foreign postal and customs regulations.
