Calculating the iron balance is one of the tasks that must be performed when analyzing the efficiency of blast furnaces. When it is not possible to continuously monitor iron losses and the generation of waste products, these characteristics are calculated on the basis of specified consumption coefficients. However, using such coefficients can distort the results of performance evaluations when there are ongoing changes in the composition of the charge or the strength of its individual components. The distortions can be especially problematic when there is a deterioration in the strength of the raw material and part of the charge does not participate in the formation of the pig iron. This applies in particular to fine fractions formed as the charge materials are moved from the stockhouse hoppers to the top of the furnace. In addition, the gas flows rising out of the furnace carry fine particles formed in the top of the furnace and the upper part of its shaft. The intensity of the particle flow and the size of the particles increase at the moment the particles drop off the large bell.
