In the production of modern tube steels, special attention is given to their content of corrosion-active nonmetallic inclusions (CANI). Even if the steel does not contain nonmetallic inclusions such as oxides, sulfides, or silicates, finished tubes may undergo rapid corrosion in service due to the presence of CANI. The use of calcium-bearing materials in out-of-furnace treatments facilitates the formation of CANI, but such materials are needed to improve the steel’s castability on continuous casters. This article presents results from the use of cored wire with fillers of barium-silicon-calcium and REM to alleviate the contamination of steel by CANI.
