FEATURES OF A CLASS III BLAST-FURNACE REPAIR

All of the liquid pig iron needed by the West Siberian Metallurgical Combine is currently supplied by two blast furnaces. Thus, any lengthy stoppage of either furnace would result in sizable production losses. Blast furnace No. 3, with a useful volume of 3000 m~3, began its present period of operation on Dec. 23, 1998 after a class I overhaul. During this time, the furnace has smelted more than 11.5 million tons of pig iron and has undergone three class III repairs. Neither the refractory lining nor the internal structures of the furnace have yet been repaired. During the three class III repairs - carried out in 2000, 2002, and 2003 - the combine replaced defective sections of the shell near iron notch No. 3 and installed six inserts with a total area of about 14 m . The combine also repaired two sections near the second course of refractory blocks in the shaft and installed inserts with a total area of about 1.5 m~2. Finally, it repaired a section near the knuckle (at about the 10.500-m elevation) on the skip side of the furnace. In this case, inserts with a total area of about 3 m were installed.
