The knowledge gained from many years of experience in the pyrometallurgical processing of hard-to-concentrate naturally alloyed raw materials in rotary kilns at the Orsk-Khalilovskii Metallurgical Combine (now Ural Steel) has been used to develop new procedures, technologies, and organizational guidelines that are making it possible to ensure continuous high-productivity operation of the kilns. The combine has also been able to optimize the parameters of the process in order to obtain high-quality products. This article discusses optimizing the operation of rotary kilns for the production of bloomery iron from iron-bearing metallurgical wastes and screened brown ore obtained from the Khalilovskaya group of deposits. The experience that has been accumulated in kiln operation can also be applied to other metallurgical processes carried out in these types of furnaces.
