In an article published in the May 1998 issue of Machine Plant & Systems Monitor, Thurston Brooks and Brett Gidge of Wilcoxon Research, Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA, explained how vibration sensors were shown to have evolved from simplepiezoelectric accelerometers to sophisticated smart systems capable of decision-making in situ. Here, Thurston highlights the developments that have occurred, or are anticipated to occur in smart sensors which are intended specifically for vibrationmonitoring. Although many of the issues discussed apply to other sensory modes such as acoustics, pressure and temperature, only the unique aspects of smart vibration sensors are covered.
