The initiation and progression of melanoma: estrogens or estrogen receptors?

From the interesting paper by Koomen et al. [1], it emerges that the use of oral contraceptives or hormonal replacement has no significant influence on Breslow thickness of cutaneous melanoma (CM). However, the authors do suggest an association between estrogen use and Breslow thickness modified by age. They also do not exclude decreased Breslow thickness among women using estrogens, especially older women.
