摘要

The landscape we live in is a complex composition of materials formed by the forces of nature over time. The creation of a specimen white oak may take 200 years. A towering cliff beside a river may have taken millennia. Like many landscape architects, Carol R. Johnson is absorbed by opportunities for use of natural materials to create places which fit into their surrounding context. One of the most important of these materials is natural stone. From earliest childhood Carol, whose family vacation in Vermont, knew about stone and stone quarries. The marl quarry in Barre, Vermont, at that time gave young visitors marl samples with startlingly different colors and textures. These were blocks which Carol and h brother used for building imaginary towers and other structures when they returned to their home in New Jersey. Carol mother and father were both avid gardeners who loved nature. They transmitted these sensibilities to Carol, who worked in a tree nursery before studying landscape architecture at Harvard.
