The current discourse of medicine is dominated by standards, outcomes and accountability. This has driven the desire of governments and regulatory bodies for more efficient and effective ways of learning within medical education and training. From this desire has sprung the 'what works agenda'. The biomedical model of science, with its technical rationality, heavily influences research in the health field and has elevated the randomised, double-blind trial to almost divine status. In often simple situations in education, this may occasionally have a role. However, many educational interventions are complex, and conventional biomedical methods of evaluation are often of limited use or produce misleading information.
