Making film vignettes to teach medical ethics

What problems were addressed? Medical ethics is a core element of the medical curriculum. Using film provides an innovative and effective way of engaging students in reflection on and discussion of ethical issues. Students are familiar with the format and language of film and may feel more empowered to discuss 'difficult' topics that are raised in film. However, although there are a plethora of feature films with a focus on health and health care, they are often too lengthy for teaching purposes and it can be time-consuming to find the appropriate short section of film to illustrate a specific ethical issue.
