When a new edition of a book is published it tells you at least two things. First, the book has been a success and the publishers expect a readership for the new edition, and second, the subject matter has changed sufficiently to justify an amended version.So what does it tell you when a book reaches its eleventh edition? A very good book in a rapidly changing field. Mollison's Blood Transfusion in Clinical Medicine was first published in 1951 and the last edition, written by C P Engelfreit and Marcela Contreras together with the eponymous Professor Mollison, was published in 1997. For more than half a century this book has been the 'Bible' of blood transfusion.
