Landfill regulations

The Landfill Directive aims to prevent, or reduce as far as possible, the negative environmental effects of landfill as well as any resultant risk to human health. The Waste Emissions Trading Act 2003 and the Landfill (England) Regulations 2004 came into force on November 13 2003 and April 12005 respectively. Both implement the regulatory and technical aspects of the directive. The requirements of the Landfill Directive (1999) include classifying sites into one of three categories: a) landfills that accept hazardous waste, b) landfills that accept non-hazardous waste and c) landfills for inert waste. This has led to the end of co-disposal in July 2004. Different standards apply to each class of landfill, along with the dates which these standards are applied to landfills. They include: waste acceptance procedures, treatment of waste before landfilling, bans on certain waste types from landfill, such as liquid waste and tyres, and detailed engineering standards.
