Recycling and composting figures for 2004/05 released by the Government last week showed a huge variation in rates achieved by councils across the country. St Edmundsbury in Suffolk made the top spot, and was the only local authority to recycle and compost more than half its waste (50.6 percent). At the other end of the scale was London council New-ham, with a rate of only 6.2 percent. Showing the greatest level of improvement was Harborough in Leicestershire, rising from 14.9 percent to 46 percent in a year. The Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) congratulated its members on the impressive increases in performance. Chairwoman Joy Blizzard said: "The top performers are now producing results that only a few years ago were thought to be impossible."
