In Washington, DC, grassroots organizing (i.e., active association members) is the most important element to advancing an association's legislative agenda. Campaign contributions and money are important, as is personal access to legislators or policymakers. But, the key to success in Washington is grassroots. A winning grassroots campaign is similar to a winning campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives, Senate, or President. Campaigns for political office require that the candidate locate new voters, financial donors, and bases of support. These are the fundamental elements of building long-term influence in Washington and establishing political power. These same elements equally apply to an association's grassroots campaign as they relate to a presidential campaign.
