Higher-welfare legislation in the pig sector, in the form of a partial stall ban, comes into effect throughout the EU in less than eight months. Despite having had 12 years to prepare for the EU Directive, it is expected that on 1 January 2013, when the legislation comes into force, a number of Member States will not be fully compliant. To date, only three countries - the UK, where sow stalls have been prohibited from use since 1999 Sweden and Luxembourg - have confirmed to the EU Commission that they are already compliant with the new legislation.
