Germany grants 2.1bn dollars for coal research

Efficiency improvements and CO2 reduction technologies are two of the primary targets for research in the German government's 5th energy research programme 2005-2008. The programme with a total budget of 1.7bn euros (2.1bn dollars) will, amongst other aims, "lay the technological foundations for a low-emissions and later an emissions-free coal power station," states federal economics minister Wolfgang Clement. He says the research programme "prepares the ground well" for the power station replacement programme facing Germany from 2010. "If we want to secure Germany's electricity supply without additional imports, between, 2010 and 2025 about 40GW of new capacity will have to be built," he adds.
