With the ban on rail car movements to Murmansk lifted, RZhD imposed a ban on railings of export coal to Ventspils, Riga and St Petersburg last week. RZhD officials said the initiative came from the ports themselves because they could not cope with the volume of the coal arriving by rail, especially as much of it is frozen solid. It is understood that there were 2,640 cars accumulated on the rail line in Latvia and as a consequence railings to Riga were halted on February 11 with the ban extending to February 24. In addition, railings to Ventspils were halted February 15 for a planned six day period.
