US utility COAL stockpile statistics from January reveal how brutal the winter has been in North America. At the end of January, US power generators had 132.32m short tons of stockpiled coal, down 15.65mst from the same month in 2013, the US Energy Information Agency (EIA) reported. According to Doyle Trading Consultants, this January's drawdown of stockpiles is the largest on record for the month, and the eighth largest drawdown for all months going back to 1977.
