With little let-up in the upward pressure on world coke prices, German foundries are falling foul of unorthodox practices by European foundry coke producers to drive up the price of their product despite valid contractual agreements. Coke buyers at the over 100 foundries in Germany have their backs to the wall. They can't ditch what they see as some rogue suppliers and order coke from elsewhere because, it seems, there is no "elsewhere". With annual foundry coke consumption of about 0.43mt/year, Germany lost its last foundry coke producers when Deutsche Steinkohle's (DSK) Furstenhausen and Hassel coking plant, each with capacity 0.5mt/year, were closed in 1999. At that time, RAG subsidiary DSK effectively shifted its foundry coke production to France by clinching contracts with the Drocourt and Houillieres du Bassin de Lorraine coking plant for supplies for German customers. Subsequently, for a few years, steadily rising deliveries of low-priced coke from China took the fun out of European foundry coke production and may even have speeded coking plant closures. Drocourt, for instance, was closed in 2002.
