Over the first half of 2014 global crude steel production grew 2.5% year-on-year, rising to 821m tonnes. The strongest first half year-on-year growth rate, of 9.3%, was seen in the Middle East where there has been a lot of investment in new steel plants as the region attempts to become self-sufficient in steel production to reduce imports. Middle Eastern steel production, however, accounted for just 1.7% of global production, so although growing, it remains a small market.
