Since pipe sections have to be welded together to form the line, end-dimension control is an important factor in lay speed, and hence costs. Installation costs of subsea pipes are in the order of $1 million per day, and exceed the cost of the pipe. Consequently Rhys has learnt "rather more than he intended to about pipe dimensions". This involved understanding both the manufacturing process and how dimensions are specified and measured.
