THE STYLE OF furnace chosen for solution heat treatment of any part is determined by a number of parameters, including the shape of the item to be heat treated; the quantity to be treated per day; and the number of shifts to be completed per day. Small quantities will be done in batch mode as determined by economics of scale. The most common form of batch type heat treatment is the Vertical Force Circulation (VFC) Furnace. The heat source is usually electricity because it can be more easily spread over the walls of the furnace. Air circulation is essential to achieve the desired uniformity and the fan can be fitted in the hearth or in the lid. Depending on the distribution of the elements and more particularly the rate of air flow, temperature uniformity of better than + - 5 deg C are achievable.
