The UK plastics industry honoured its finest products, people, processors and suppliers at the 2002 Plastics Industry Awards, held at the London Hilton on 17 May. Organised by Plastics & Rubber Weekly magazine in association with the British Plastics Federation, and sponsored by a host of top companies, this year's awards were presented by TV celebrity Angus Deayton. Covering all the facets of the industry the awards are divided into four distinct areas - products, people, processors and suppliers. This year, the product category was divided into industrial and consumer categories. The judges gave the green light to FSW Design winning the Industrial Product Design of the Year award for its work on the Helios traffic light head for Siemens. The component offers improved lens performance and ease of installation. According to the judges, its modular design and use of materials was of a very high standard. A single moulding from 20 percent chalk-filled PP forms the basis of the signal head, which is fully recyclable. The hinged unit door is made from 20 percent mineral-filled PP and can be opened from either side. Other components include the hoods, which are made from LDPE with 20 percent chalk filler, and the lenses, moulded in acrylic to give high optical clarity.
