The move to third party registration by the automotive and aerospace industries had led to the development of global sector specific quality management system schemes. The predecessors of global automotive and aerospace schemes were the myriad customer quality management system manuals. The modern trend is toward sector schemes that represent the common requirements of all of the major VMs and Primes. From the viewpoint of customers, the main advantage is the fact that all their suppliers will have quality management systems complying with a single 'standard', with all the attendant advantages. Suppliers' systems will also be subject to a stringent assessment/registration/surveillance process by disinterested certification bodies. Less cost will need to be expended on SQA (supplier quality assurance), and the inevitable adversarial situation traditionally associated with customer audits will be eliminated!
