Mike Johnson director (sales and marketing) at Farlane Johnson Ltd, looks back at the development of protective materials. The difficulty experienced by any company wishing to provide adequate protective clothing for employees working with molten metal is how do they balance comfort with protection? Since the introduction of legislation, designed to force all workers to wear suitable protection in one of the harshest of all industrial environments, fabric and garment manufacturers have tried to answer this all important question. In my early days in the molten metal protective clothing market back in 1965, (is it really that long ago?) wool had just been 'discovered' as the most suitable protection against both ferrous and nonferrous metal splash. However, there was no 'controlled' method by which to determine the comparative performance of each fabric weight, and the rule of thumb was 'the thicker/heavier the better'.
