FINES imposed in Victoria recently for workplace deaths and injuries which occurred several years ago are lulling many employers into believing they will be treated lightly if they breach the state's OHS laws, according to Melbourne lawyer Karli Evans. Evans, a workplace relations and safety lawyer with law firm Mason Sier Turnbull, said that although penalties were trebled when the state's OHS Act was amended last July, the courts had not yet had the opportunity to impose these heavier fines.
