The tilt compound was the unexpected product that was obtained in the attempt to prepare the dibenzyltin dichloride homology of dichlorodimethyltin water centre dot 18-crown-6, a compound whose coordinated water forms double three-center hydrogen bonds (1). Dimethyltin dichloride as well as methylphenyltin dichloride readily yields the adduct with 18-crown-6 merely by crystallizing the reactants in an organic solvent (2). The tin atom shows octahedral coordination, and the two water molecules are cist to each other. The crown ether interacts indirectly with the tin atom through the coordinated water molecules; as each crown ether interacts in this manner with two tin atoms, a hydrogen-bonded polymeric chain is formed. The architecture and the hydrogen bonds in (H_2O)_2 SnCl_4 2H_2O centre dot 18-crown-6CH_3CN centre 1/2C_6H_(14) are almost identical to those of (H_2O)_2 SnCl_4 2H_2O centre dot 18-crown-6CHCl_3 (3); in both compounds, the lattice solvent molecules do not engage in hydrogen bonding interactions.
