In the USA, maize can legally be transformed with 11 gene constructs, while only 4 of those are registered in the EU. Since the proportions of transgenic maize in the US are ever increasing, the import into the EU is on the decline. It is postulatedthat in 1999/2000, no US maize will be imported into the EU, since a separation of permitted and non-permitted gene constructs is becoming increasingly difficult. However, the EU is obliged to import certain quotas of maize under the Marrakech agreement. So far, the problem could be circumvented to a degree by importing maize from Argentina, which complied with European legislation. But Argentinian farmers are now recognizing the advantages of transgenic maize and are expected to start cultivating it next year. An unambiguous decision on transgenic crops by the EU is called for.
