Lingonberries have promising future

What's working well in Saskatchewan should work well in Ontario, according to a professor at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Richard St. Pierre led a seminar on lingonberries at the Ontario Horticultural Crops Conference. He said there is a fledgling crop in Saskatchewan and is optimistic that soil and climate conditions in Ontario would produce a good yield here. Lingonberries are a woody evergreen shrub with creeping branches that produce a bright red fruit. The plant is also known as dry ground cranberry, and is closely related to the bog cranberry. The fruit has a juicy, lemony taste. It is high in vitamin C and pectin and rich in ben-zoic acid that acts as a natural preservative and makes the fruit quite acidic (pH2 5).
