Model machining: Devon-based company single-sources its machine tools based on practicality and business sense

Even at one sixth of real-life size, an Armortek reproduction of a Tiger tank from the Second World War is an impressive sight, especially since it is made of steel and aluminium, can manoeuvre over rough ground and through water, and can even 'fire' its gun, producing a satisfying amount of flame, smoke and noise. This is a level of realism that customers of the Dunkeswell-based company have come to expect from one of the world's top suppliers of scale military models. Every year, Armortek makes around 250 self-assembly kits of model tanks and other armoured vehicles. The company, which is run by husband-and-wife team Mark and Gill Watkins, was founded in 2001 as part of a group of manufacturing ventures. It was originally based in Daventry in the Midlands, but when the couple acquired sole ownership of the Armortek business last year, they relocated the growing operation to the Devon countryside.
