The end draws closer for the Boeing 747

In a letter to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) published on 27 July, Robert E Verbeck, senior vice-president and corporate controller of Boeing, said: "It is reasonably possible that we could decide to end production of the 747." Accprding to one aerospace analyst, "the potential beginning of the end for an aircraft that has changed aviation like almost no other is being signalled as discreetly as possible. Ending production will surely be a difficult decision, given the role the aircraft has played for Boeing in the 46 years since it entered commercial service."
