Thread milling: Reliable threading process saves Glenrothes company considerable time and cost

The application of a thread-milling system has resulted in significant savings for Glenrothes-based Forth Tool & Valve Ltd. The tooling, which cuts threads by the circular interpolation of a milling cutter that is ground to the required thread form, has eliminated a recurrent problem with thread quality on larger-diameter tapped threads (from 0.750in/M20 upwards). This quality problem had occasionally made it necessary for threads to be finished by hand, rather than on the machine tool, but now the cycle time is more predictable, and both quality and accuracy of the thread form are virtually guaranteed.
