Although David Wicks decided against taking up a place at Art College because it would have interfered with his motor-cycle racing, he has since succeeded in combining artistic flair with engineering know-how in the design and manufacture of bespoke mountain bikes - or, more precisely, mountain-bike frames. He is the first to admit that his father, Steve, has been a big influence, both on his racing career and his engineering training. A highly regarded motor-cycle designer and former motor-cycle racer himself, Steve Wicks set up Leeds-based Wicks Engineering Co Ltd in 1978; With his background as a tool maker in the plastics mould industry, it was inevitable that his company would specialise in prototype work, as well as repair and maintenance projects that can demand a significant amount of reverse engineering.
