On-machine tool measurement: German aero-engine manufacturer highlights the benefits of its non-contact measuring capabilities

Quality is of the utmost importance to the aero-space industry, so it comes as no surprise to find that leading engine manufacturer MTU Aero Engines uses optical measuring systems on more than 100 of its machines to ensure that it achieves process stability and the best possible manufacturing results. Walter Strohmeir, NC support engineer at the Munich-based company, says: "When your car develops engine problems, you simply pull over and wait for a mechanic, but when jet engines fail in an aircraft, the lives of several hundred people are potentially at risk. That is why we at MTU attach the highest priority to quality. All our components must satisfy the close tolerances that we specify - often to within just a few hundredths of a millimetre."
