The Hotchkiss family has a long association with engineering: John Hotchkiss, a Royal Navy Lieutenant, invented a mechanism for lifting heavy weights and ships' anchors in 1799. Indeed, a modification of his invention is said to have helped the British fleet to out-gun the enemy at the Battle of Trafalgar, because it enabled cannon balls to transported to the gun decks faster and more easily.
