The purpose of this paper is to introduce two of the newer methods for ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of welds, with a focus on piping and ASME code requirements. Ultrasonic-testing (UT) technology and procedures are available for a range of welds, materials and pipe sizes. When used in lieu of radiographic testing, UT has the advantage that there is no requirement to clear the area of personnel, so nearby work can proceed uninterrupted. With conventional manual UT, the UT probe is rastered (moved back and forth) to sweep the beam through the entire volume of the weld (Figure 1). The technician notes where indications appear and follows a procedure to size the flaws. Results are noted by hand on a standard report form; the original data is not recorded.
