Amature, lush garden made up of seven distinct "rooms" sounds like the stuff of expansive rural plots. But for nearly 30 years, Toni Laidlaw and her husband, Eric Hanley, have been coaxing this wonder out of their relatively confined 10-by-15-metre urban backyard in the heart of Halifax, Nova Scotia.Toni first bought the house in 1978 without much gardening knowledge ("I didn't know a petunia from a rose"), and it wasn't until Eric moved in seven years later that they both got really serious about it. Once Toni got started, she was surprised to findthat she was drawn to the design element most - structure, texture and movement - rather than colour. As the garden progressed, they called in long-time friendKen Shannik of Insigne Gardens to advise uii the plant selection and to help tend to it each year. Now, listening to Toni talk about each room in the garden is like hearing a doting mother describe her seven children.
