Advances in understanding acclimation to light stress and light-energy dissipation mechanisms in photosynthetic organisms: an overview of the Light Stress and Photosynthesis meeting (LS2001) and dedicated Special Section papers

The papers in the special light stress section of this issue of Functional Plant Biology were submitted by participants of the meeting entitled Light Stress and Photosynthesis (LS2001). LS2001 was a special satellite meeting held 13-17 August 2001, and scheduled to coincide with and complement the 12th International Congress on Photosynthesis held in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, from 18-23 August 2001. The venue for LS2001 was paradisiacal Heron Island, situated about 70 km off the coast from Gladstone, Qld, in the Great Barrier Reef. Meeting functions were undertaken mostly at the P&O Heron Island Resort facilities, but also at the Heron Island Research Station, itself owned and operated by the University of Queensland. The meeting was sponsored in part by generous donations from ISS Inc., a scientific instrument company from Champaign, IL, USA, and Heinz-Walz, a scientific instrument company of Effeltrich, Germany. Organizers included Prof. A. W. D. Larkum from the University of Sydney and Drs Marilyn C. Ball and Adam M. Gilmore from the Research School of Biological Sciences at the Australian National University (RSBS, ANU).
