Recently, a major beverage producer observed defects in the parison - the shape the glass is molded into before blow - and finished containers produced by a bottling line. Industrial glass forming is a complex sequence of unit processes that includes melting and refining the raw material, cooling and conditioning the molten glass in forehearths, transitioning from a continuous glass stream to discrete gobs in the feeder, and the actual forming processes in the individual section (IS) machine. The forming of glass containers by the "press and blow" process can be divided into five main steps: gob formation at the feeder, transfer and loading of the gob into the blank, pressing of the parison, inversion of the parison into the blow mold, and the reheat and final blowing of the container.
