Fuel additives have been used widely since the 1920s, initially to improve the performance of aircraft in combat and then to improve the performance of on-road petrol engines as compression ratios increased. Since the late 1970s diesel and petrol sold on the forecourt has, for the most part, contained keep clean additive packages with a blend of up to six different chemicals. In non-automotive sectors, different fuel additives have been used since the 1960s in large industrial-scale boilers and furnaces (open-flame systems) to guard against corrosion and ash build-up.
