Sales of organic foods in the United States showed a strong upward trend in the last two decades. The value for sales of organic food increased an average of 16 % annually during2002-20io. A rise to about US$ 28 bn may occur in 2011. Fruits and vegetables account for nearly half of sales of organic food items. More farmers are producing organic crops as they find contracts with retailers and wholesale traders. Some of the estimated 1,000 new farmers markets opening in the last two years provided extra outlets for farmers to sell organic produce. These operations provided a combination of local products and organic produce, often at reasonable prices.
