Ghana has always been a model for progress. On 8 March 1957, the West African Cold Coast, as it was called in those days, was the second of the black African countries (after Liberia) to become independent, under the leadership of the legendary KwameNkrumah. The economy is still very much dependent on raw materials (gold) and agricultural products such as cocoa. However, the attempts to achieve democracy and fight corruption have repeatedly been rewarded with massive programmes of economic assistance and with debt relief ever since the president John Agyekum Kuf uor stabilized the country to a certain degree, an achievement which should not be taken for granted in the case of West Africa. Kufuor did quite an understandable thing: he followed the recommendations of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank and the money kept on flowing.
